If you are like me, you appreciate premium products in dentistry, but you HATE paying the “dental tax”. In a startup dental office, working capital is sacred, and often times we can sacrifice some our of spare time to avoid paying a premium. One easy item to self-manage is your emergency kit. But, it takes a bit of effort to set up and update (based upon expiration).
Keep in mind, one of the most common people to be involved in a dental emergency is the doctor themself! In my opinion, it’s crucial that you train your team, but also create easy-to-follow Cheat Sheets for addressing emergencies.

The best way to stock your Emergency Kit is to buy the common OTC drugs yourself, beware of expiry. You can log this in a Google Doc, Google Calendar, or any timekeeping/reminder app. To be honest, it’s worth the cost savings because many kits are 2-3x the cost compared to DIY.
*Note: Your Emergency Kit can vary based on your state and associated guidelines and sedation permits.

Supplies
We stock our Kit with OTC products from CVS/Amazon and Ace Southern (previously known as SASRx).
Pro Tip: For epinephrine, you can buy ampules and use insulin syringes that are pre-marked for adult vs pediatric dosages. The same can be done for flumazenil or any multi-dose vial.
I hope this help take off a tiny bit of stress for someone going through the startup grind. Cheers.
