San Diego Porcelain Crowns

Modern dentistry offers more options than ever to help you restore and maintain an optimal level of health. While the strength and beauty of materials continue to advance, the skill of the practitioner makes a significant difference in every outcome. Dr. Wallrich focuses on utilizing the best techniques for comprehensive care, returning even the most damaged mouths to full health.

Sometimes teeth undergo significant damage due to cavities, heavy bite forces, trauma, or even normal functioning. If a root canal is needed to salvage a severely compromised nerve, the tooth may be especially fragile. Many situations can leave teeth in danger of loss if treatment is bypassed. Dental crowns, or caps, allow these teeth to be rebuilt and covered with materials that mimic nature. Not only are most “capped” teeth indistinguishable from natural teeth, but they're also extremely secure and comfortable.

Crowns can be crafted to repair a single tooth, multiple teeth (including the entire mouth), or in conjunction with dental implants to fill a space. In fact, when missing teeth enter the equation, special consideration might be given to placing a dental bridge or implants.

The Benefits of Porcelain Crowns

At Harbor Family Dental, we serve patients in San Diego, Point Loma, and Ocean Beach and provide porcelain crowns with a number of great benefits, including:

  • Natural look and feel – Our crowns are crafted from the highest-quality porcelain using our specialized CEREC milling machine, which provides them with a totally natural look and feel. Your crown will be indistinguishable from a natural tooth when you smile, bite, and chew.

  • No special care required – Simply continue brushing and flossing properly, and see Dr. Wallrich for a teeth cleaning and oral exam every six months. That’s it!

  • Treatment in one appointment – We offer same-day CEREC crowns. You can get your crown in just a single 1-2 hour appointment, instead of having to wait multiple weeks for it to be built at an outside dental lab.

  • Protect teeth & prevent complications – A crown covers up all of your remaining tooth structure, and prevents further damage and complications to your tooth.

  • Long lifespan – Our crowns are durable, stain-resistant and can last 15-20 years or more with proper care, making them a great long-term investment.

For these reasons and many more, our office is a great choice for restorative dentistry. Schedule a consultation now to learn more!

How Is A Porcelain Crown Placed?

The process of having a porcelain crown placed at Harbor Family Dental takes a single, 1-2 hour appointment. First, Dr. Wallrich will clean and numb your mouth. You can also be sedated if you wish.

Next, he will trim away the damaged enamel from your tooth and shape it into a smooth, stable platform onto which your crown can be attached. Once your tooth has been prepared, he will use a special handheld 3D scanner to capture a 3D image of your mouth.

This image is uploaded to our CEREC computer system. Dr. Wallrich will use this model to create your crown and load a block of porcelain into our CEREC milling machine. Then, the machine will cut and sculpt the porcelain until it matches the model designed by Dr. Wallrich.

Next, Dr. Wallrich will check the crown for the proper fit and finish, and make any necessary minor adjustments. Finally, he will bond it onto your tooth permanently, completing the procedure.

Are Porcelain Crowns Permanent?

Yes. Crowns are not intended to be a reversible treatment, so you will need to replace your crown if it ever fails or becomes damaged. This is because a lot of your underlying enamel has to be removed when preparing for the placement of a crown. If your crown is removed, it will be vulnerable to damage and decay.

That means that for all intents and purposes, the process of having a porcelain crown placed is permanent. You may need to replace it in 15-20 years, though it will likely last a much longer time if you care for it properly.
